10/19 Ned Rothenberg/MIVOS + Ben Opie Ensemble @ Frick Fine Arts

on Sun, 2011-10-16 21:50

Ned Rothenberg's Sync Inner Diaspora (Tzadik) was probably the highlight of the car-music-listening on a recent Host Skull mini-tour. Luckily, for Pittsburgh, his music won't be limited to a car stereo as he'll be coming to town this Wednesday with MIVOS Quartet. The two teamed up in 2010 for the fascinating Quintet For Clarinet And Strings. On Wednesday, October 19 at the Frick Fine Arts Auditorium, University of Pittsburgh, the five-piece will perform the quintet piece. You could probably categorize this as "not to miss." Check out Ned in a solo setting:

Opening up the show will be the Ben Opie Ensemble. Ben will be releasing the Ensemble (Pittsburgh) 2008 LP. The album is a document from Anthony Braxton's stay in Pittsburgh in 2008. This particular set of music finds Braxton conducting and performing with a top notch group of Pittsburgh musicians. City Paper's Andy Mulkerin interviewed Ben last week about the album.
