"Solvitur ambulando."
A line connects holy sites of Pittsburgh's Oakland neighborhood: St. Paul's Cathedral to the Shrine of the Blessed Mother; Forbes Field to the River; Keith Haring's laundromat to the childhood home of Andy Warhol. Along that line are also sites of less well-known importance: An immigrant family's victories, a transient student's downfall, the ghosts that haunt our own tiny mythologies of Pittsburgh. For LEY LINE, artist-pedestrians Ashley Andrykovitch, Nina Marie Barbuto, Host Skull, Justin Hopper, Anne Roecklein, Lisa Toboz, and Emily Walley walked this line, gathered its cultural samples, and created new artwork about these mythologies both grand and small. In doing so, LEY LINE represents a replicable method for artistically sampling the city and understanding where we live; a way to "draw a straight line and follow it," that we might un-magnetize our compasses with new narratives and myths.
Host Skull created a series of short video pieces utilizing stop-motion to explore cyclical patterns and illusion. Taylor Knight and Amy Wellock Staggs provided movement and David Bernabo (Rhodes piano), Will Dyar (drums/percussion), and Ben Montgomery (trumpet) provided music.
Videos will be posted once the show closes.
