Ley Line now open at Assemble: Host Skull, Emily Walley, Justin Hopper, more...

on Sun, 2012-06-03 20:59

June 1 - 30, 2012: Assemble, Pittsburgh, PA

Artists: Ashley Andrykovitch, Nina Marie Barbuto, Host Skull, Justin Hopper, Anne Roecklein, Lisa Toboz, and Emily Walley. Concept by J.H. Curated by J.H. with E.W.

"Solvitur ambulando."

A line connects holy sites of Pittsburgh's Oakland neighborhood: St. Paul's Cathedral to the Shrine of the Blessed Mother; Forbes Field to the River; Keith Haring's laundromat to the childhood home of Andy Warhol. Along that line are also sites of less well-known importance: An immigrant family's victories, a transient student's downfall, the ghosts that haunt our own tiny mythologies of Pittsburgh. For LEY LINE, artist-pedestrians Ashley Andrykovitch, Nina Marie Barbuto, Host Skull, Justin Hopper, Anne Roecklein, Lisa Toboz, and Emily Walley walked this line, gathered its cultural samples, and created new artwork about these mythologies both grand and small. In doing so, LEY LINE represents a replicable method for artistically sampling the city and understanding where we live; a way to "draw a straight line and follow it," that we might un-magnetize our compasses with new narratives and myths.

Host Skull created a series of short video pieces utilizing stop-motion to explore cyclical patterns and illusion. Taylor Knight and Amy Wellock Staggs provided movement and David Bernabo (Rhodes piano), Will Dyar (drums/percussion), and Ben Montgomery (trumpet) provided music.

Videos will be posted once the show closes.

Locally Toned: Two Ringtones for the Unreliable Narrator series

on Thu, 2012-05-24 22:58

It has been pretty busy lately. Host Skull is moving into the mixing stage of a second LP. HS is also finishing up some new stop-motion animation videos with Taylor Knight, Amy Staggs, Morgan Wolk. Opening is June 1 at Assembly gallery. More on that.

So, what I am getting to is a contribution to T. Foley's LOCALLY TONED project. She's been collecting an insanely wide variety of ringtones over the past few years, and I was able to make my contribution. The Unreliable Narrator series is a new thing I started. Essentially, it is like a one-person, internal radio play. I'll have more to say on it later. But check out an interview I did with Teresa here: INTERVIEW. Then check out the ringtones here: here and here.

Ps. If you like these, two more exist and will be posted to a blog near you in the near future.

Past Tracks: Host Skull "It's Always Time at Roup"

on Mon, 2012-04-30 03:16

This edition of past tracks comes to your from the near past. Last fall, Erik Cirelli and I played as a duo guitar version of Host Skull at Roup House. Richard Magnelli, the musician behind Satyr/Elfheim, documented the set. This edit contains a few moments from largely improvised set. Listen to it below. For more coverage on Pittsburgh's noise and experimental scene, keep an eye on Richard's blog for frequent live recordings, commentary, and photos. http://skull-valley.blogspot.com/
